Guided by the wisdom of his grandfather, wetland scientist Calvin DeWitt, a young filmmaker spends a summer immersed in the mysterious world of Waubesa Wetlands. Together, they uncover the life, secrets, and importance of wetlands, and in doing so reveal our relationship to all living things.

Though they cover only around 6% of the Earth’s land surface, 40% of all plant and animal species live or breed in wetlands.

Wetlands safeguard biodiversity, reduce floods, store and clean our water, and hold immense amounts of carbon. Yet, they are being lost at an increasing rate. In 2023, a Supreme Court ruling stripped federal protections from nearly half of America’s wetlands, leaving the future of these vital ecosystems in our hands.

An Invitation to Wonder is a story of hope for these vital ecosystems and a call to reconnect with the local wonders that surround us all. Only through discovering where we live, and falling in love with it, can we preserve our natural heritage for generations to come. â€‹
